It is 1.40-inches long with 8 coils.Ĭ2SZ 3B688-A is listed for '62-'64 T-birds without A/C from 6/1/62. Power Steering Oil Reservoir Filter Element Retaining Spring:ī8SZ 3B688-A is listed for '62 T-birds without A/C before 6/1/62. I find the 5/1/62 date reference for the above items interesting as changes in the reservoir itself were dated a whole month later, which implies that either for one month there were older-style 1/2"-outlet remote reservoirs with filters? Or perhaps there's a typographical error and 5/1/62 should be 6/1/62? I haven't found the part number for the non-filter reservoir plate that's been pictured - it should be in the '61 Ford Car Parts & Accessories Catalog, but I have yet to find it. Power Steering Oil Reservoir Filter Element Support:ī8SZ 3C677-A (which is derived from a '58 T-bird number) is listed for '62-'64 (and I assume '65) T-birds without A/C from 5/1/62 - it was also used on '62-'64 full-size and Fairlanes from 5/1/62 as well.Ĭ2SZ 3C677-A is listed for '62-'64 T-birds with A/C from 5/1/62. It's also curious to note that the introduction date for filter usage precedes changes to the remote reservoir and internal components by 1 month, as I note further down in this posting. the reservoir mounted on top of the pump. What I'm not sure about is its use in '61-'62s without A/C, i.e. It is not listed in the '61 Ford Car Parts & Accessories Catalog. Previous edits of the Master Parts Catalog need to be checked to see if any listings are present. Without checking the '58-'59 listings, I suspect the filter was dropped for '60, and brought back late in '62 production as an engineering correction, possibly related to the wandering steering gearbox problem. No listing for '60-'61, so this narrows down the date the filter was introduced. Items to key on are:ģC677 for the bottom plate (called Power Steering Oil Reservoir Filter Element Support) ģB688 for the spring between the filter retainer and bottom of reservoir cover ģB754 for the filter retainer (called Power Steering Oil Reservoir Filter Element Retaining Spring Seat).ī7A 33538-A (a '57 Ford number) is listed for '62-'64 Full-size, Fairlane and T-birds from 5/1/62 and '63-'64 Falcons. In other words, time to dig through parts books to see if there were different versions of the same basic part number. This is a revelation to me, as I have never paid that much attention to this issue, having worked mostly on 63's until recently. Please look at the photos again and let us know what you think. It is impossible to mount the filter assembly in one of the reservoirs without the extended inlet tube. The reservoirs without filters have an internal baffle at the inlet and no extended inlet tube, while the reservoirs with filters have no baffle, and an extended inlet tube. If you review the previous photos in this thread, you'll see that there are two distinct reservoir configurations. I used to believe that all PS reservoirs were originally equipped with the filter and its' accompanying mounting components, but I no longer do. I am more than inclined to think that a previous owner or mechanic removed the filter and other loose internal components of the reservoir when servicing the system and didn't bother to put it all back together. For instance, my '63 and the companion parts car that was built within a few days of each other in late October '62 both had all the internal parts in the remote reservoir. Since power steering systems for Ford have had a filter in the reservoir since the early '50s and well into the '60s, I highly doubt your system didn't come with the internal parts like the filter support, springs, retaining washers, etc. A review of parts listings in the Master Parts Catalog for the filter should reveal years of application.
